James Stephen Porter, 76, of Shiloh, died Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at Brightmoor Hospice, Griffin.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Saturday, December 5, 2015 at the chapel of Cox Funeral Home, Manchester with Pastor Rick Lipp officiating. Interment will follow in Meriwether Memory Gardens with Jason Porter, Tyrone Porter, Kevin Porter, Clyde Railey, Ernie Railey and Roger Milner serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00 am prior to the service.

Mr. Porter was born September 3, 1939 in Columbus, the son of Ruben and Hester Mann Porter. He retired from the United States Navy with twenty years of service and was a Vietnam War Veteran. After his retirement, Mr. Porter worked in civil service at Ft. Benning for a number of years. He attended Old Shiloh Baptist Church and was a member of the American Legion Post in Manchester. Mr. Porter was also a dedicated supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project. During his leisure time, he and his wife, Sammye, enjoyed antiquing and accumulated an impressive collection of antiques.

Mr. Porter is survived by his wife, Sammye Cox Porter of Shiloh; one brother, Tommy Porter of Williamson; two sisters, Sandra Brown of McDonough, Jo Ann Garner and her husband, Travis of Austin, TX; aunts and uncle, Ben and Gloria Mann of Shiloh, Ludie Railey of Shiloh and a number of nieces and nephews.
