Doris Ann (Miller) Waggoner was called home by our Heavenly Father on Saturday evening, November 28th, 2015. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing. A wonderful daughter, loving sister, devoted wife and mother, doting grandmother, proud great grandmother, and good friend to many, Doris will be terribly missed.
Doris was born November 21, 1931 in Lawrenceville, Illinois to Harry Edwin Miller and Jessie E. (Lidaker) Miller. Doris had one sibling, her older brother Jack Miller. She grew up in Lawrenceville and attended Lawrenceville High School from 1947-1950. She remained lifelong friends with many of her classmates.
Our family loves the story of how our parents met. Doris met the love of her life, Robert Nelson Waggoner in June 1950 while she and her best friend Donna Grigsby, were walking in their neighborhood in Lawrenceville. Robert and his best friend Wally Wilson were cruising around the town in a Ford. The guys came upon the girls and asked the girls if they wanted to go for a drive to Vincennes (the next town over) for a Coca-Cola. The girls, being the proper young ladies they were, said no, but perhaps next time they meet … so the guys circled the block. This was the beginning of two future marriages and two couples who remained the best of friends.
Doris married Robert on December 23, 1951 in Lawrenceville. At the time of their marriage, Robert was farming with his parents George R. Waggoner and Hazel Waggoner in Sumner, Ill.
Doris dutifully accepted the role of military wife in 1952 when Robert joined the military. The couple moved around the United States living in Fayetteville, North Carolina; George Field Army Air Base in Lawrenceville, Illinois; Cape Fear, North Carolina; Biloxi, Mississippi; Clinton Sherman Air Force Base in Burns Flat, Oklahoma; Vandenberg AFB in Lompoc, California and finally in 1969, Robert was assigned to Castle AFB in Atwater, California and the family took up residence in Winton, California. As a military wife, Doris took responsibility for raising their four children due to Robert's frequent deployments overseas. Doris was widowed in November 1990 after Robert lost his battle to cancer.
Doris worked for the Winton School District as a school secretary for 17 years. She cherished her colleagues and enjoyed sharing a daily laugh with them. During her employment Doris was a member of the California School Employees Association (CSEA) Winton Chapter. She also was a member of the Winton Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7792.
Doris was a member of the Hour of Power Eagles Club through the Crystal Cathedral. She was a faithful member and watched the sermons weekly. She was elated when in 2007 she was able to visit the Crystal Cathedral in Anaheim where the family attended the Christmas production. Over the years, Doris attended various Bible Studies at Yosemite Church and was blessed by her study group ladies. She also enjoyed numerous years of playing Bunko with her girlfriends.
She loved Disneyland and made many trips with her children and grandchildren. She especially loved the many road trips exploring the 49'er trail and dozens of California gold historical points of interests.
Doris had numerous pets over the years. Each of her pets was either a stray that found her or they were from a shelter. She had a big heart for the wayward pet and her home was never void of a four legged friend.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses.
Doris simply adored her grandchildren and poured her love for family into each child. She leaves behind nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband Robert Waggoner, mother Jessie Miller, father Harry Miller, and brother Jack Miller.
Doris will be remembered as a sweetheart with a great sense of humor; but, also as a spunky spirit who spoke her mind. We are blessed with countless memories that bring tears of laughter as well as tears of sadness at her loss. She was most happy when with her family at dinners and other large gatherings throughout the year. We are blessed to know she is in Heaven and no longer in pain. She is rejoicing in her restored body.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, December 5th, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the Winton Cemetery. Following the graveside services, a reception to celebrate her life will be held at 3:30 pm at First Baptist Church of Merced on the corner of Buena Vista and M Street.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her honor to the Crystal Cathedral or a SPCA of your choice.
