Born in Casper, Wyoming on November 2, 1920 to Wendell and Estelle Howland, he was raised in Port Chester, New York.
A proud World War II veteran, Howland was a B-17 Pathfinder navigator with the 8th Air Force and flew numerous missions from England, including a mission over Gold Beach on D-Day.
After WWII, Howland earned a B.S. in Geology from Colorado College and worked for 30 years with Gulf; Venezuela 1947-1970 as a petroleum engineer, then 1970-1977 with Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Company (a Gulf subsidiary) then as an independent consultant for land reclamation 1977-1984. He was also an avid fisherman.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Dorothy Archer Howland.
He is survived by son Johnny Howland (and wife Margaret), daughters Priscilla Spradley (and husband Pat), Nancy Howland Pryor, six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
