He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on Aug. 1, 1862. He was wounded at the Battle of Antietam
(in Maryland) on Sept. 17, 1862. On Dec. 13, 1862, he was wounded again at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia. He died of his wounds at age 34 on Dec. 24. 1862, in Falmouth, Virginia, just across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg.
