George M. Freking was born on March 1, 1920, to August and Rosa (Oberbroeckling) Freking in LaCrosse Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. George received his education in the Heron Lake Public Schools; graduating in the Class of 1937. After graduating, George farmed until enlisting in the United State Army on January 14, 1942. He served during World War II as an Army Captain until being honorably discharged on March 11, 1946. Upon his discharge he returned to the Heron Lake area where he continued to farm.

On September 7, 1947, George was united in marriage to Helen E. Mathias at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. This marriage was blessed with four children, Lenore, Dan, Doug, and Joe. After marriage, George continued farming until June of 1955 when he became the postmaster of the Heron Lake Post Office. In 1973, George became the postmaster of the Windom Post Office and they made their home in Windom. On February 28, 1987, George retired from a job he absolutely loved going to everyday. After retirement, George and Helen continued to make their home in Windom where George had more time for his enjoyments in life which included traveling, playing bridge, collecting, watching sports, walking and keeping up on current events. George recently became suddenly ill and became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom where he passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, July 10, 2010, at the wonderful age of 90.

While living in Heron Lake, George was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake where he served on the church board, choir, and taught CCD. After moving to Windom he became a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom. He also was involved in his community as a 4-H leader, the Golden "K", a member of the Heron Lake Municipal Hospital Board, member of the American Legion Post 214 in Heron Lake while living there and a current member of the American Legion Post 206 in Windom, the community club in Heron Lake, the Windom City Council, active in the 8th District of the Minnesota Association of Postmasters and a member of the National Association of Postmasters of he United States (NAPUS).

George is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Helen Freking of Windom; four children, [living relatives omitted] three sisters, Margaret Henkels of Heron Lake; Sister Marcan Freking, OSF of Rochester; Anastasia Mathias of Heron Lake and many other relatives and friends.

George is preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Monica Bartosh, William Freking, Clementine Berg, Joseph Freking, Mary Bauman, Alois Freking, Lawrence Freking, Rose Liepold, Leo, Clotilda, Bishop Frederick Freking, Josephine Kreger, August, Alfred and Edward Freking.
