Samuel F. Marshall, 85, of Sarasota, Fla. and Berkeley Springs, died November 27, of heart failure.

He was born in Salem, Ohio in 1930.

He worked for the Canton Repository during his high school years and was eventually hired by Cleveland’s Plain Dealer, then Ohio’s largest daily newspaper.

He was a chief investigative reporter and won the prestigious Polk Award in 1964, presented by Long Island University School of Journalism. He was Communications Director at the Communications Workers of America, an AFL-CIO affiliate headquartered in Washington, D.C. He worked for the Urban Coalition and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) through the early 1970s. He was appointment as Special Assistant to Secretary of Labor W. J. “Bill” Usery. He then set up a personal consulting business until his retirement.

He liked traveling.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years Sally Ann Kraus Marshall and his children Walter Lon, Marie Lynette, Spencer Lee, Josef Lowell and grandsons Spencer Hurd and Samuel Aliesch Marshall.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter Annalee Sanford.
