George T. Condeelis HICKORY George Thomas Condeelis, 89, of Hickory, left his earthly home and passed into the arms of his heavenly Father Monday, Oct. 28, 2013. Born Sept. 16, 1924, in Scranton, Pa., he was the son of the late George (Sr.) and Agnes Condeelis. George was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Hickory, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. George served as a radio operator during World War II and fought in the European Theater where he received numerous medals, including the Purple Heart. During the war, he was captured and served more than one year in a German concentration camp, later being freed by the Third Army, led by General George C. Patton. Following the war, George lived in Scranton where he met and married Rosemary Marazio and became a successful entrepreneur. He was the owner/operator of Carl's TV and grew his business from one store to 33 throughout the eastern United States. After retiring, George enjoyed traveling with family and friends. His family will remember him as a loving husband, father and grandfather, and as someone who cared for others and never met a stranger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Condeelis and Chris Condeelis; and one sister, Eleanor East. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Rosemary Marazio Condeelis, of the home; sons and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Yen Condeelis, of Hickory and George C. Condeelis, of Hickory; daughters and son-in-law, Dianne Condeelis Davenport and husband, Warren K. Davenport, of Hendersonville and Rosemary Condeelis Penland, of Hollywood, Fla.; grandchildren, Amy Leslie, Sara Condeelis, Rebecca Berry, Katrina Hamlin, Stephanie Hamlin, Brooke Davenport, Brent Davenport, Christina Penland and Matthew Penland; and great-grandchildren, Myles Penland, Liam Berry, Ethan Condeelis, Nathan Condeelis and Raven Leslie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert Ferris, Celebrant. A graveside service with military rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville. The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday, Oct. 31), from 5 to 7 p.m. at Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Hickory. Serving as pallbearers will be Kelly Davenport, Matthew Penland, Brent Davenport, Carl Goldberg, Larry Fleming, and Jeff Rosler.
