The Rev. Stanley Deresienski, S.S.E., was celebrant assisted on the altar by the Rev. Francis X. McMahon. Acolytes were Katelynn McPhail and Hannah Early, with Annie Duff serving as cross bearer.
The Brattleboro Detachment No. 798 of the Marine Corps League formed an honor guard in front of St. Michael's Church prior to Mass.
Music for the Mass was under the direction of church organist Peggy Goldyn, who accompanied the St. Michael's Church Choir. Prelude hymns included “Irish Medley,” “Danny Boy,” “Irish Lullaby” and the “Marine Hymn.”
The entrance hymn was “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
The pall was placed on the casket by Mr. Baker's son, Shawn Baker, and daughter Deirdre Baker Rawson.
The Old Testament reading from Isaiah was read by Kate Baker, a daughter-in-law. The New Testament reading from Romans was offered by Betina Berg, a close friend of the family.
Rev. Deresienski gave the gospel reading from Luke and then led the prayers of the people, followed by the homily. He gave testimony to Mr. Baker's love of family, neighbors and the outdoors, as well as his wonderful sense of humor and spirit of friendship. The homily concluded with the reciting of the Irish Blessing.
The offertory gifts were presented at the altar by Deirdre Baker Rawson and Kate Baker.
The presentation hymn was “Lord, I Have Come to the Lakeshore.”
The communion hymn was “How Great Thou Art.” The responsorial psalm was Psalm 42.
Following communion, words of remembrance were given by Hugh Barber, who spoke of Mr. Baker as an accomplished golfer who throughout his career shared his skills with many area youth. Barber said Mr. Baker was a good father who took great interest in his children and also shared several golfing stories highlighting Mr. Baker's exceptional golfing abilities.
The Mass concluded with the incensing of the casket and final commendation.
Committal rites and burial followed in St. Michael's Parish Cemetery, where Rev. Deresienski offered the prayers of committal.
Full military honors were accorded the U.S. Marine Corps veteran by members of the American Legion Post 5, VFW Post 1034 and the Marine Corps League under the direction of Cmdr. Armand Nadeau.
The graveside presentation was read by American Legion Cmdr. Steve Martin followed by prayers offered by chaplain Robert Johnson.
The American flag that draped the casket was folded by Louis Lebreck and Herb Meyer and presented to Mr. Baker's son by Richard Hodgdon.
Volleys were fired by the rifle team that consisted of Louis Lebreck, Herb Meyer and John Nebelski Sr.
The color guard consisted of Joe Garofalo, Mark Hynes, Donald Zidik, Robert Johnson and Armand Nadeau.
Serving as pallbearers were David Gates, Peter Duff, Hugh Barber, William Hill, Wayne Wright, Lee Lebowitz and Charles Gouger.
The graveside committal services closed with a balloon release.
A reception followed the services held at the American Legion on Linden Street.
On Sunday afternoon at the funeral home, a catholic vigil service was lead by Sister Kathy Reed of St. Michael's Parish.
Of the many attending the calling hours and services, delegations present included the Brattleboro Country Club, Stratton Mountain Country Club, The Marina Restaurant, BUHS Class of 1953 and neighbors from the Lexington Avenue section of Brattleboro.
Mr. Baker, 71, a lifelong resident of Brattleboro, died June 1, 2005, at Eden Park Nursing Home.
