Dr. Harris received early education at a high school at Brownsville, TN. From 1854-1857 he was an instructor in Latin and Greek at St. Thomas' Hall in Holly Springs, MS and studied theological courses under the preceptorship of Rev. J.W. Rogers, DD. there.
He received orders of the diaconate on April 25, 1858 in St. Andrews Church in Jackson, Mississippi and on March 25, 1860, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Otey at St. Mary's Church in Memphis, TN.
In 1877, he received the degree of S.T.D. (Doctor of Sacred Theology) from the University of New York and the same degree later by the University of the South.
He began his work in Pinola, Mississippi.
