Exploration geologist who applied remote sensing techniques and an inquiring mind to his mineral exploration profession and who mentored those around him.

David grew up in Conway, AR and was elected student body president in his senior year at Conway High School. He was co-captain of the undefeated 1964 CHS football team and the Arkansas All-Star East team. He attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR on a football scholarship completing his B.S. degree in 1969. He earned his M.S. degree in Geology at The University of Arizona (1970-1974); his thesis was on the Geology and alteration-mineralization zoning of the Pine Flat porphyry copper occurrence, Yavapai County, Arizona. He then completed his PhD in Geology & Remote Sensing at the Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada-Reno (1986-1990); his dissertation, completed in 1988, was written on the Genetic, spectral, and Landsat thematic mapper imagery: Relationships between desert varnish and Tertiary volcanic host rocks, southern Nevada. While at UNR, he was part of the Cooperative Institute for Aerospace and Terrestrial Applications.

He was the author of several papers including Remote sensing characteristics of porphyry copper systems, western America Cordillera with co-author R.T. Wilson in AGS Digest 20 Bootprints Along the Cordillera in 1995 and Remote sensing strategies in mineral exploration and development: The precious metal and porphyry deposit models in 1996.

He worked as a Research Assistant at Univ.of Arizona, and as an exploration geologist with Rio Algom (1982-1986), BHP Minerals for 11 years primarily in the U.S. and Mexico (1990-2001), with Freeport-McMoRan Exploration in Africa, and as an independent consultant. Over his 36-year career, he consulted on projects in 47 countries.

He was a member of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Geology, Society of Economic Geologists (1992-2005), Geological Society of Nevada, and the Arizona Geological Society (AGS) (1996-2000). He served as an AGS Councilor in 1997, AGS President 1998, and Past-President in 1999.

He was also a collector and curator of antique scientific instruments including microscopes, spectrometers, compasses, scales, calculating devices, and other navigation instruments (complementing his interest as an aircraft pilot). He was the owner and and operator of an online antique instrument business called Opticalia Antiques.

Dave was a friend, colleague, and mentor to many and will be greatly missed.

SHERMAN, Texas - David Moore Spatz, 68, born Jan. 12, 1947, Sherman, Texas, died Nov. 24, 2015, Tucson, Ariz. Growing up in Conway, David was CHS student body president, CHS football team co-captain (1964, undefeated) and Arkansas All-Star East co-captain. He graduated from U of A (BS), University of Arizona (MS), and University of Nevada's Mackay School of Mines (PhD). His professional work was in Africa, Asia, South America and the American west.

He leaves behind former wife, Terri Haag and his companion, Joy Rutan. His parents were Kenneth C. and Mary Harton Spatz, deceased. Brothers Chris (Thea) and Harton (Nona Jo) of Conway, aunt Harriett Wright of Birmingham, Ala., and six nieces and nephews survive.

Scheduled memorial service: Wednesday, December 2 (2 p.m.) in the chapel, First United Methodist Church, Conway, visitation following. Memorials may be directed to animal welfare or FUMC.
