Donald David Smith, 86, of Nassau, died peacefully at home after a long illness with his loving wife, stepchildren, and their families by his side. He was born July 7, 1923 in Troy, N.Y., to the late Otto and Elizabeth (Kaiser) Smith. Don proudly served in World War II and the Korean War as a U.S. Marine. He retired from the Watervliet Arsenal in 1971 after 20 years. Don was a longtime member of the Troy Germania Hall and the Southern Tier Senior Center. He loved to fish and travel with his loving wife. Don is survived by his loving wife, Doris Lindeman Allison Smith; children, Diane (Art) Burl, Patty (Loyal) Burl, Cathy (Rick) LaVoy, Jack (Theresa) Allison, Melinda (Joe) Rush, Pamela Smith, Maureen (Adam) Longworth, and Donald (Bonnie) Smith. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank all of Don's doctors and nurses at N.Y. Oncology Hematology, Albany Medical Center and Rensselaer County Hospice for their kindness and caring during his illness. Friends and relatives are invited to call at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St., Nassau, Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. There will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Rensselaer County Hospice, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144 or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 5 Computer Drive West, Suite 100, Albany NY 12205
