U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Rutgers College New Jersey, in 1847, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Piermont, New York. He was a member of the New York State Assembly, in 1855, served in the New York State Senate, (1856-57) and a delegate to the Republican National Convention, (1864-76). In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving until 1881. After leaving Congress, he lived in retirement until his death at age 57.
