Resident Dies In Kansas

Funeral services for Mr. H.P. Bartley, 84, who died at his home in Elkhart, Kansas Saturday, Aug.20, were held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the M.E. Church in Rolla, with burial in Rolla Cemetery. Rev. W.D. Darnall of the Christian Church at Hugoton, conducted the services. The Swaim Mortuary was in charge.

OBITUARY

Henry Princeton Bartley was born in Monroe County, Ky., March 22, 1854, and departed this life Aug. 20, 1938, at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 28 days.

He was united in marriage to Matilda Howard Payne, April 28, 1878. To this union was born 9 children, four died in infancy and Smith Bartley, a son, passed on April 6, 1906, just two weeks after the family came to their new home in what was called the Postle neighborhood. Una Sillery, a daughter, passed away Feb. 12, 1920. He was preceded in death by his wife by a little over ten years. He was converted and joined the Baptist Church at the age of 40 united with the Christian Church and remained a faithful follower until death.

The family moved from Kentucky to Sullivan County, Mo. in 1889 and later in 1906 they came to Oklahoma and proved up a homestead in what was then known as the Postle neighborhood. They moved to Rolla, Kansas in March 1913. Mr. Bartley opened a grocery store as soon as a building could be provided and continued in this vocation until August, 1923. He has not been engaged in any active business since that time, but has spent the remainder of that time in Rolla (with the exception of five months just preceding his death that he lived with his daughter in Elkhart).

"Granddad" Bartley, as he was known by all Rolla and community, will be missed by both young and old. Until his hearing began to fail him he was never known to let anyone young or old have the last word in a humorous joke. He had been in failing health since March, but he did not become seriously ill until about three weeks ago.

He leaves to mourn his loss, one brother, S.H. Bartley of Monrovia, Calif., three children, Kyle Bartley of Liberal, Kansas, Leona Young of Elkhart, Kansas, and Beva Ipson of Rolla. Twelve grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
