After his time in the military, he earned his Master’s degree at South Dakota State University. He was a Professor of Agricultural Engineering at SDSU from 1955 to 1978. He was a student advisor and guided the educational path for many students but also guided the life path for many students as well. He took a year sabbatical to go to Monticello, Indiana to work at Western Sales and Service seeing it as an opportunity to improve his curriculum to better fit the needs of his students.

In 1978, Harvey left SDSU to explore a new opportunity to become a Design Engineer at Red River Distributing in Crookston, MN. He designed an air seeding system that was the first of its kind. In 1980, a colleague of Harvey’s told him about an opportunity to work with the Food and Agricultural Organization (a division of the United Nations). For ten years, Harvey was a Project Leader in Cairo, Egypt. During this time he helped develop sound agricultural practices. After retirement from the United Nations, he spent his time managing the Meadow Creek golf course in Volga, SD.

Harvey married Juanita Marie Landry on June 19, 1953. To that union came five children. They were happily married until her passing on May 17, 1997.

Harvey was always community minded. He found great joy in being a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader. He served on the Sioux Valley school board. Harvey married Ellen Schlemmer on September 12, 2003.
