Roman Catholic Cardinal. Roman born Carlo Grano entered the Pontifical Roman Seminary, later furthering his studies at the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum of Sant'Apollinare. Ordained priest on June 14, 1912 by Msgr. Giuseppe Ceppetelli, he joined the Secretariat of State in 1923, serving as chief of protocol from 1945 till 1953 and substitute and secretary of ciphering between 1953 and 1958. Master of Papal ceremonies for twenty six years, Pope John XXIII elected him archbishop of the titular see of Tessalonica and appointed him nuncio in Italy on December 13 of the latter year, with Grano receiving his episcopal consecration on December 27 that year at St. Peter's Patriarchal Vatican Basilica from the Pontiff himself. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of June 26, 1967 with the title of San Marcello, receiving his red biretta from Giuseppe Saragat, President of Italy, at the Quirinal Palace in Rome. Passing away at his Roman residence, he lies buried in his title.
