James Douglas "Doug" Cotner, 79, died Nov. 23, 2015, at his residence in Phoenix after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 6, 1936, in Lima to James M. and Treva B. Bowsher Cotner. He married Kathryn L. Ehlers, who died in 1990.
Mr. Cotner graduated from Lima South High School. He attended college at Bowling Green State University, receiving a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in education. He was in numerous theater productions at Bowling Green and Huron House throughout his college days. After college, he attended and graduated from Naval Officers Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He was stationed in Maryland at the Naval Security Group at Fort Meade. He was stationed for two years in Morocco and had a tour of duty in Vietnam. After eight years in the Navy, they moved to Phoenix, where he taught drama and English in Phoenix-area schools until he retired. He had some movies to his credit and was in many commercials and theater productions in the Phoenix area.
Survivors include two children, Scott D. (Kathy) Cotner and Cynthia E. (Andy) Johnson; a grandson, Christopher D. Cotner; a sister, Cheryl M. (John) Heidenescher; a niece, Lois M. (Mike) Ruby; a nephew, James A. (Dawn) Heidenescher; a great-nephew, Eric D. Heidenescher; and a great-niece, Ryan K. Heidenescher.
He was buried at National Memorial Cemetery in Arizona. Contributions may be made to the Sun City Sheriff's Posse.
