John W. Erskine was born in TN in 1840. His father, Hugh Erskine was born in South Carolina. His mother, Jane Richards Erskine was also a native of SC, they married in 1820. Hugh and Jane had 11 children.
John W. Erskine went with his parents to SC when he was 3 years old. In 1853 the family came to Texas . John remained with his parents until his father's death at which time his mother lived with him until her death. In 1867 John bought a farm in Limestone county. In 1885 he bought the farm in Falls county which he was living on at the time the article was published. The farm had 305 acres of land. IN 1869 he was married to Nannie Griffith, a native of SC. Her parents were L.L. and Sarah (Owens) Griffith, also SC natives. Mrs. Eskine died in 1877, leaving 5 children: Alice, wife of Wm. Glover of Falls county; Robert R.; Carrie L, wife of James Coleman, of Falls county; Arthur D. and Rosa, who is deceased. In 1879 John married Mrs. S.P. Posey, widow of Eli Posey of Limestone county, Texas. She was a native of GA , the daughter of W.C. Snipes, her mother's maiden name was Cox. Both of her parents were born in GA. With his second wife he had 6 children: Edgar T. and Edward M. , twins; Nannie L.; John C.; Clinton C. and Mortimer Melvin. Mr. and Mrs. Erskine were member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
