She was the daughter of an educated Latin scholar. Her first husband, Col. John Allen Walker, Sr., died fighting in the War Between the States. After growing up a Cumberland Presbyterian, she joined a Baptist church since her second husband, Col. Aaron Washington Dunn, was Baptist. The two of them became the largest contributors to Texas Baptist mission causes in their day and were very involved in supporting Christian higher education in Texas. She died four months before their daughter Rosa's wedding.
