Hazel Irene Burris Coleman passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, November 23, 2015, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care Center, in Winston Salem, N.C. Born October 11, 1921, in Asheville, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Asbury Cordell Burris and the late Cora B. Cogburn Burris.
She was the sister of the late Jessie Mae Burris Moore (Don), Rudolph H. Burris (Elizabeth), and Robert C. Burris (Anne) of Asheville, N.C. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Loyd Coleman, of Clemmons, N.C., and son, Edward Scott Wall Coleman, of Little River, S.C.
Hazel and her late husband were in the restaurant business for many years in Winston Salem, Forsyth County and the surrounding counties, and were the first KFC, Wendy's and H. Salt Fish & Chips franchisees in North Carolina.
Hazel was a member of Fairview Moravian Church, in Winston Salem. In 1938, she was voted Queen of Mirth of the Western North Carolina Rhodedendron Festival, in Asheville, where she graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School. An excellent cook, Hazel opened her first restaurant, the Tick Tock, in Asheville, N.C., in 1949. Also known for her creative nature, Hazel was an excellent seamstress, gifting many friends and family members with her fine sewing and embroidery work over the years.
Devoted to her family, she was selfless and generous throughout her long life. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile and delightful personality, her helpful spirit, and sweet, gentle nature.
Surviving are her daughters, Dianne M. Wall Coleman Yarbrough, of Winston Salem, and Debra L. Coleman, of Lewisville, N.C.; her grandchildren, Amy E. Yarbrough and Richard C. Yarbrough (Leah) of Winston Salem; L. Christine "Crissy" Coleman Malloy (Kevin), of Clemmons; Anastasia Coleman, of San Diego, California; and Stephanie Petree Boswell (Elijah), of Walkertown, N.C. Her descendants include eleven great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A grave-side service will be held Monday, November 30, at 2:00, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory, 6135 Ridgewood Road, Clemmons, N.C. Prior to the service, an hour of visitation will be held at Salem Funeral Home, 120 S. Main Street, Winston Salem, from 12:30 until 1:30.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston Salem, N.C. 27103. Arrangements are by Salem Funeral & Cremation Services.
