Mrs. Borden was born March 30 1915, in Texas County, Okla., to the home of Octa Maria and George G. Sweat, and died Saturday evening, Aug. 26, 2006, in Portales. When Ola and her family moved to New Mexico, they first settled in Clovis, but later moved to a farm at Floyd. She graduated from Floyd High School and attended college classes at New Mexico Highlands University and Eastern New Mexico University. On Nov. 10, 1935, in the parsonage of the Methodist church she married R.L. Borden. For many years she was a dealer for Stanley Home Products and held parties in numerous homes in the area. After the family opened Borden Peanut Co. in 1956, her emphasis began to change from the home products to helping at the mill where she worked in the office. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and active in United Methodist Women for many years. Mrs. Borden was an accomplished artist, and a member of La Escalera Art Guild. She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers, and was active for a time in the local garden club. Mrs. Borden played both the piano and organ by ear, and also enjoyed studying the Spanish language. Family was always very important to her, and family gatherings in her home were an important part of her life. For the past 1 1/2 years she has been a resident of the Bee Hive in Portales.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Sheryl Borden of Portales; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jan and Rick Purvis of Pandaries, N.M., Marilyn and Sam Rigsby of Portales and Lawanda Calton of Portales and Bill Calton of Portales; eight grandchildren, Kim (Mark) Mann of Sugarland, Texas, Sandy (Gary) Fields of Portales, Kelly (Ed) Drangmeister of Baton Rouge, La., Cassie (Chris) Stull of Austin, Texas, Michael Borden of Albuquerque, Melissa Borden of Portales, Rob Borden of Seattle, Wash., and Kyle (Jana) Rigsby of Portales; eight great-grandchildren, Billy, Katie and Lizzie Mann, Dillon Borden, Greydon and Kyleah Rigsby, Briana Stalker and Brooke Drangmeister; and a nephew, Oscar (Carolyn) Toliver of Clovis.
