Compton, California - Col. Charles F. Willard, "The Little Aviator," 93, died Monday at Glendale Community Hospital. Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, 3 Feb 1977, at the Doninquez Seminary chapel, under the direction of the Cremation Society of California, Glendale. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery, New York, New York. Willard was an aviation pioneer who was chief engineer for Glenn L. Martin, and also designed flying boats with Glenn H. Curtiss. On 18 Mar 1910 he made the very first heavier-than-air flight in Oklahoma City at Capitol Hill, during a three-day airshow. Willard, earlier the same year, flew in the first major airshow in the US, and one of the earliest in the world, held at Dominquez Field, in present day Carson, CA. It was billed as the Los Angeles International Air Meet.
