Kent was born in Falfurrias, Texas, to Roy Pitt and Merle Davis Westmoreland. He grew up in Alice, Texas, where he sang in the First Baptist Church Youth Choir and participated in the Alice Coyote Band. After graduating from Alice High School in 1973, he received a degree in history from Sam Houston State University. Kent was previously employed by Maersk Shipping in Houston as a shipping agent with 30 years of service.

Kent enjoyed and experienced many different things throughout his life. What he cherished most in life were his family and friends; he loved spending time with his family and most importantly during the holidays. He enjoyed camping, in all the Texas Parks, with his APO family from college, going to Texas festivals, playing different musical instruments and listening to Irish folk music. Kent was also a "master tinkerer" who liked to work on cars and motors and giving up was not an option until it was done right. He was a member of St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Houston.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Westmoreland.

Survivors include his mother, Merle Westmoreland; sister, Elizabeth Thomas and husband, Randy, of Gatesville; niece, Savannah Halteman and husband, Shawn, of Copperas Cove; nephew, Roy Thomas and wife, Brooke, of Charleston; and great-nephew, Jack Dalton Thomas.
