Evelyn was the daughter of Alvin Cox and Dianthia Gardner Cox. Evelyn's mother died several days after Evelyn was born, on April 30, 1911 at the age of 20. By the time of the 1920 U.S. Census Evelyn (8) was living with her father Alvin (46) and her sister Bertha (10) at the home of her grandfather, Edward Cox (71) and step-grandmother Mary Cox. At the time of the 1940 U.S. Census, Alvin (now 66) was still living in his parents’ house with Evelyn (age 29). However, Evelyn had married Harland Foss on June 4, 1938, so Harland (age 29) was living there, too. Harland enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 13, 1943 and he was killed in action in Europe. He was buried in the U.S. Military Cemetery in Epinal, France. Evelyn later married Leroy Brown. Evelyn died in 1987, three years after her husband Leroy died.
