In addition to holding the position of Professor of French, Joseph Royall Smiley was an educator and education adminstrator at major U.S. universities, including being President of the University of Texas at Austin from 1961 to 1963; University of Colorado system from 1963 to 1969; and, the University of Texas at El Paso from 1969 to 1973. Dr. Smiley was also associated with the National Science Foundation, UNESCO, and the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education (WICHE). Smiley attended Southern Methodist University receiving the BA (1931) and MA (1932) degrees, and Columbia University where he was awarded the PhD in 1947. Publications included: Le Style de Blaise Pascal (1932) and Diderot's Relations with Grimm (1950). Smiley Court, which is comprised of family housing apartments located on the East Campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder, is named in his honor.
