Thomas Edward McVey was born February 13, 1931 in Humeston, Iowa the son of Everett and Neva Olive (Williams) McVey

Because he suffered from epilepsy he lived in town with his paternal grandmother, Fannie McVey who became his second mother. He was the eldest of seven sons.

Tom graduated from Humeston High School in 1952. Tom was removed from school by the superintendent because his illness was deemed to be too disruptive. A younger brother was also removed from school when he protested too vigorously to the superintendent who then fell down a flight of steps. After the superintendent left the school, Tom went back to school and earned his degree.

He did handy-man and landscaping work for several years before moving to Knoxville in the late 1950’s. In Knoxville, Tom worked as a maintenance helper for the Marion County Road Department. He resided with his grandmother until her death in 1975. He overcame many obstacles resulting from his disease helped by family, neighbors, caregivers, and Dr McKeever.
Tom passed away on Friday, November 20, 2015 at the Knoxville Hospital & Clinics at the age of 84 years.
