Walter worked most of his life as a cook in the Silver Dollar in Bay Port, Michigan, Bella Vista in Caseville, and He is the founder of "Walt's" Resturant together with his sister Dorthy Naffien Dufty. Upon his retirement in 1988, he turned the restaurant over to his niece Ruth Ann Lapka.
He was a member of the St. Johns Luthern Church in Berne, the Caseville Eagle's Club and Rod and Gun Club.
