GRAFTON — Walter Dale Gaines, 74, of Rt. 2, Grafton, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 30, 2007.

He was born September 7, 1932, in Flemington, WV, a son of the late Charles and Jessie Lawson Gaines.

Dale was a retired Chief Machinist Mate in the U.S. Navy and was veteran of both Korea and Vietnam. He spent his last four years of military service as a naval recruiting officer in Fairmont.

After retiring from the service in 1974, he opened Inserv Inc., a company he owned and operated in Grafton for over twenty years. Dale, who possessed a great love of music, could be found in many musical venues, and often donated the use of his farm for musical gatherings throughout the summer.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Gaines was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Gaines and Robert Gaines; and four sisters, Vivian Simmons, Norma Knight, Gladys Hess and Helen Smart.

Dale is survived by his wife of 51 years, Antoinette “Jean” McAfee Gaines; eight children, daughter, Debra Couch and husband Ronald of Morgantown, son, Glen Gaines of Grafton, son, Bruce Gaines and his wife Shawne of Grafton, daughter, Sheila Felix and her husband Michael of Berkeley Springs, daughter, Vivian Sickles and her husband Robert of Grafton, daughter, Becky Bartlett and her husband Greg of Grafton, son, Howard Gaines and fiance, Krista Phillips of Grafton, daughter, Julie Royce and her husband Chad of Grafton; eleven grandchildren, Cpl. Brennan Felix, Jared Felix, Amanda Felix, Hunter Felix, Christopher Couch, Bobby Sickles, Bradley Sickles, Beau Bartlett, Raven Bartlett, Gavin Royce and Ellie Royce; two brothers, Lawson Gaines of Flemington, James Patrick Gaines and wife Brenda of Flemington; one sister, Verah June Barberine and husband Frank of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2007, at the Bartlett Funeral Home with the Rev. Lester Darl Boylen officiating. Interment will follow in the West Virginia National Cemetery, Pruntytown where military graveside rites will be accorded by V.F.W. Post 3081, D.A.V. Chapter 24 and American Legion Post 12.

The family will receive friends and loved ones from 4-9 p.m. on Saturday, June 2 and from 2-9 p.m. on Sunday, June 3. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice Care.
