Florence Long Powell, age 85, died Tuesday, November 24, 2015 in Wythe County, Virginia. She was a resident of Ceres, Virginia in Smyth County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ferdinand Powell, Jr.; her parents, Dr. Henry Clay Long and Annette Steele Long; her brother, Dr. Henry Heath Long and her sister, Sarah Rhoda Long Peterson. She is survived by her son, Ferdinand Powell III of Wytheville, VA; two daughters, Florence Annette Powell of Meadowview, VA and Margaret Anne Powell of Wytheville, VA; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Florence graduated from Knoxville High School, Knoxville, Tennessee and attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution and First Families of Tennessee. She had been a member of the Junior League of Knoxville and served as President of the Monday Club in Johnson City, Tennessee. At the time of her death, she was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Wytheville, VA. Florence was a homemaker and devoted her life to raising her three children and running the family farm. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 28, 2015 at St. John’s Episcopal Church with Father Kent Tarpley officiating. Interment will follow in East End Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 275 East Main Street, Wytheville, VA 24382; Sweet Briar College, P.O. Box 1057, Sweet Briar, VA 24595 or Virginia Episcopal School, 400 VES Road, Lynchburg, VA 24503-1146. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, VA is serving the Powell family.
