AGED VETERAN DEAD
George W. Botkin, one of the oldest residents of this county and among the few remaining Confederate veterans, died rather suddenly on Sunday night last at the home of his son on Shaw's Fork in the eastern part of the county. Mr. Botkin was born in 1834, hence 90 year old, his aged wife having preceded him to the grave something like a year ago. He was a farmer by occupation and was the father of a large family of children sixteen in number. Of these eight survive, three of whom reside in Highland, the others in the West. Those, living in this county are Jas. E., George L. and A. J. Botkin, the aged father making his home with the last named at the time of his death. Mr. Botkin was also a veteran of the Civil War, Company F., 25th Virginia. In spite of his extreme age, deceased was able to attend the recent term of the Circuit Court, and while his friends noted the fact that the weight of years were telling on him, he still evidenced considerable bodily vigor. Interment took place in the family burying-ground on Tuesday afternoon.
Born in the area of Highland that was Pendleton County before 1847.
Company F, 25th Virginia Infantry Regiment.
1850 Highland County Census
Jack Bodkin, 47; Polley Bodkin, 50; John Bodkin, 22; Peggy Bodkin 18; George Bodkin, 16.
Living next to the Christian Simmons family on Bullpasture Mountain.
