According to a birth record filed by his mother and witnessed by an aunt on 17 Jan 1942, Ebben Bess Enyart was born 21 Nov 1888 at the family home in Goshen Township, Washington County, Arkansas. In 1900, he was living with his parents and siblings in Goshen Township. In 1910, he was a "machine hand" for a sash and door company, living in Edgewood, Siskiyou County, California. By 1920, he had moved to Oakland, California, was living with his wife, Leona May (nee Sackett), and two children, Ebben Lowell and Inze Luverne. By 1930 he and his family had moved to Los Angeles. Based on 1940 census records, in 1935 the family was living in Montebello, California, but by 1940 Leona and the children had moved to Santa Maria, California, without Ebben.
