Theresa Maurine Gibbs was born January 29, 1925, in Lubbock, TX to the home of A.C. and Gertrude (Taylor) White. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 21, 2015, at her home with her loving son at her side.
Shortly after her birth her family moved to Kenna, NM and then to Melrose when she was 4 years old. She attended and graduated from Melrose High School. She attended Eastern New Mexico University for 2 years. She then began working in Civil Service at Clovis Air Field (Cannon Air Force Base) as a secretary. Maurine met the love of her life, Joffre Gibbs at the Methodist Church in Melrose. While singing in the choir one Sunday morning, Joffre walked in the back of the church and Maurine said to herself,"theres that college boy I'm going to marry", and they were married on May 12, 1946, they had one son Douglas in 1949. Maurine was a dedicated and hard working wife and mother.
She was not only a homemaker; cooking, cleaning, sewing, but a farm and ranch hand as well; sorting and branding cattle, shocking feed, throwing hay, helping move the irrigation sprinkler, hoeing the garden, etc. She also took on extra jobs. She was a secretary for the Farmers Home Administration in the 60's and 70's and was a secretary for the 27th Combat Support Group at Cannon Air Force Base from 1977 to 1985. Maurine loved to travel and was fortunate enough to have visited all 50 states, with the countries of Canada, Mexico, Nova Scotia and Europe..
Oh what a cook! Almost every Methodist preacher coming to Melrose found their first visit was to the Gibb's home for Sunday dinner; fried chicken, pot roast or chicken fried steak with all the garden fresh trimmings. And those every morning homemade biscuits were to die for. She was most famous for her angel food cake which she always entered in the Curry County Fair and came home with a blue ribbon for forty years plus (same day fresh eggs were the secret!).
Maurine loved her church and her church family which she supported faithfully for 86 years. She sang in the church choir, taught various Sunday School classes, worked in the nursery, vacation bible school, and was even the backup piano player from time to time
.Maurine is survived by her son, Douglas Gibbs of Clovis; two grandsons, Josh Gibbs and Jared Gibbs of Clovis; her nieces, Bettie (Jim) Hogue of Lubbock, TX, Janie (Dr. Jacob) Moberly of Clovis, Elnora (Gene) Nugent of Sundown, TX, Agatha Sartain of Castle Rock, CO, Patsy (Tommy) Merritt of Clovis, Jan White of Silver City, NM, Colleen (Ron) Thayer of Luna, NM;,Joan White of Albuquerque and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her wonderful friend of 77 years, Kathryn Biggers.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Joffre Gibbs; four brothers, James White, Alvin (Al) White, Ralph White, and Jay White; her brothers and sister-in-laws, Johnny and Thelma Elliott, Oal and Evie La Rue, Jimmie and Daphna Sartain; nieces, Loretta Monroe, Kathryn White and nephews, Ed White, Bob White and Ricky White.
Services will be held Tuesday, November 24, 2015, at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Melrose, NM with burial to follow in the Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis, NM, with Jared Secret officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Melrose Methodist Youth Fund; 202 W. Ave B. in Melrose, NM 88124.
