An English rugby international and first class cricketer. He had the unusual distinction of almost playing in England's first rugby and cricket Tests but just missed out.

He was one of four brothers who each achieved significant deeds in their lives. He played the first of his five rugby Tests in 1872 against Scotland, a year after the first Test ever was played. He also played first class cricket for Gloucestershire and helped them to win four championships along with the Grace brothers. He toured Australia with WG Grace's team in 1873/4 and thus missed by a few years the first cricket Test, played in 1877.
