"In Fairhaven, Nov 21st, Mrs Mary Sampson, aged 78 widow of James G. Sampson. formerly of Falmouth, Me." Source: Obituary, Date: Friday, December 4, 1857 New-Bedford Mercury (New Bedford, MA) Volume: LI Issue: 18 Page: 3

Death Record: Mary Sampson, aged 72 years, 2 months, Female, Widow, born Falmouth, Maine to Nathan and Annie Bucknam, Cause of death Cancer of the stomach. Burial Wood Side Cemetery.

She was the daughter of Nathan Bucknam 1756 – 1824 and Anna Ann Pote 1761 – 1823 as can be seen by the above cited obituary combined with her death record.

She married to James Gardner Sampson 1768 – 1831. They had the following children:

1) George Sampson 1808 – 1870

2) Abigail Prince Sampson 1810 – 1895

3) James William Sampson 1812 –

4) Clarissa Bucknam Sampson 1814 – 1891

5) John Sampson 1817 – 1866

6) Hannah M Sampson 1819 – 1863

7) Benjamin Bucknam Sampson 1825 – 1897

After her husband died in 1831 she moved to Fairhaven, Bristol, Massachusetts.

Some authors claimed she was Mary Pote and that she married first to Jeremiah Bucknam 1776 – 1804 and that they had three known children:

1) Dorothy Bucknam 1798 – 1877

2) Mary Bucknam 1800 –

3) Nathan Bucknam 1803 – 1878

Jeremiah Bucknam was lost at sea. And the story goes that his widow Mary (Pote) Bucknam who married James Gardner Sampson.

But as you can see by the cited obituary and the death record she was born Bucknam and not Pote. So we can put that old chestnut to bed.
