Melba Moosman Mathews
Our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Melba Moosman Mathews, passed away at her home in Provo, Utah on Monday, January 7, 2008, after a long and valiant battle with cancer.
Melba was born in Escalante, Utah on June 28, 1925, to Lorin Melvin and Uvada Alvey Moosman. She grew up in Boulder, Utah and later married Gerald Lynn Mathews in the Manti LDS Temple on May 21, 1941. They made their home in South Provo where they raised their four children, and she resided until her death.
Melba loved her home and yard and took immaculate care of them. She was an excellent homemaker, seamstress, gardener, and provided wonderful meals for her family on Sundays, holidays, and other special occasions. The pajamas, quilts, and afghans that she made are treasured gifts by all family members.
She was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served in many callings. Melba was an avid genealogist and spent hours researching her family history. She worked in the Family History Center for many years. Melba also worked at McFadden's Pies, Utah Technical College, and Zion's Bank, where she was a respected and valued employee.
Melba is survived by two sons, Kenneth E. (Dana) Mathews of Springville, Utah, and Terry Ray (Keeley) Mathews of Bellingham, Washington, her daughter, Diana (Don) Stuver of American Fork, Utah, and a grandson, Michael Lynn Mathews, who she raised since he was a young man. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, her sister Donna Jean (Bruce) Wilson of Boulder, Utah, brothers, Ray L. (Shirley) Moosman of Salt Lake City, Utah, Donald Moosman of Boulder, Utah, and many other extended family members. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Lynn Mathews, son, Merrill Lynn Mathews, grandson, Chad Peoples Stuver, her parents, and brothers, Merrill and Leon Moosman.
The family expresses their love and appreciation to her daughter and son-in-law and the staff at VISTA Hospice Care for their dedicated care during the last few months of Melba's life.
