He was a Veterans of over 12 years of service in the US Marine Corps having reenlisted on February 19, 1964 in Pensacola Florida. GySgt Perkins arrived for duty in Vietnam on January 17, 1968 where he was assigned to and served with Company K, 3d Battalion, 26th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
During the month of March the Battalion was participating in Operation SCOTLAND II in the vicinity of Khe Sanh in northern Quang Tri Province. Company K was providing the defense of Hill 861 and on March 28, GySgt Perkins was wounded by hostile rifle fire while engaged with the enemy. Evacuated to the USN Hospital Ship the USS Repose for treatment, he subsequently died on May 17 from the wounds he has sustained.

Perkins died of his wounds by small arms fire aboard the USS Repose on 5-17-1968 while serving as an Infantry Unit Commander with Kilo Co., 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. Sgt. Perkins started his tour of Vietnam on 1-17-1968.
Sgt. Perkins is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles F. Perkins of 3905 Carpenter Avenue, Bronx, New York, and he would leave one sister, Mrs. Mary I. Morris of New Jersey, and he reenlisted with the Marines in Pensacola, Florida on 2-19-1964.
Awards: Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with One Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, 3rd award.
