A Staff Sergeant in the US Army Air Force during World War II, he served as flight engineer and top-turret gunner on a B-17F 'Flying Fortess' in the 364th Bombardment Squadron, 305th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 8th (Bomber Command) Air Force which was based near Chelveston in Northamptonshire, England. He was killed in action while participating in the Second Raid on Schweinfurt (14 October 1943) which became known as 'Black Thursday' due to the high loss of life among the American airmen.
He was recipient of the Purple Heart, Air Medal, Europe–Africa–Middle East Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
