He retired from General Motors Corp. after more than 20 years of service. He was a member of the Lexington United Methodist Church where he was an usher and a member of the choir. He played in the Nitty Gritty Trio and had been a member of the Modern Woodmen of America since 1936.
He is survived by his wife, Alberta of Port Huron; two daughters, June Samis of East Detroit and Sandy Swoffer of Port Huron; a son, Jack E. Sherman of Los Angeles; 11 grandchildren; two great0 grandchildren; a brother, Richard Atkinson of Illinois and a nephew, Gerald Erickson of St. Clair.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
