James J. Cowell, 85, of Plum, was welcomed peacefully into the arms of the Lord Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015. He was the beloved husband of Mary Catherine (Lewis) Cowell; loving, devoted father of Joseph (Sally) Cowell, Dan (Barb) Cowell, Mike Cowell, Tim (Larisa) Cowell and Karen (Tom) Avis; affectionate "Pap" of Joshua, Jacob, Katelyn, Elizabeth, Monika, John and Anya; brother of the late Mary Ellen Gahagen and Gertrude Cowell; and uncle of Charlie Gahagen.

Jim was an Alumni of the St. Vincent Prep School Class of 1949. Jim served in the Navy on the Coral Sea from 1951 to 1955. He retired from Westinghouse in 1994 after 35 years of service. He was a founding member of Our Lady of Joy Parish, where he devoutly led the rosary at daily Mass and was a perpetual member of the Holy Name Society. In addition to his dedication to his faith, he enjoyed gardening, watching Westerns and playing cards with his family. As a lifelong Pittsburgher, he was a diehard fan of the Steelers and Pitt Panthers. His love and devotion to his faith and family was an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the JOBE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY INC. (MONROEVILLE/PLUM CHAPEL), corner of (445) Beatty Road and 48 North, Monroeville (412-856-4747). Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Joy Parish. Interment to follow at Good Shepherd Cemetery.
