Roy Thomas Guthrie, 75, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009. He served with the U. S. Army in Germany. Before retiring, he was employed with Bowater for 42 years and served as president of IBEW for many years. He was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church serving for 20 years as chairman of the Finance Committee and was also an active member of the Seekers Sunday School Class. Mr. Guthrie was active in the Democart Party serving as executive committeeman for the 3rd Senatorial District. He served as a Bradley County Commissioner, as an Arbitration Board Member of the State Employees Arbitration Board and also served with the Better Business Bureau of Chattanooga. He was a member of the Harry S. Truman Club. He was Rose Consultant for Beaty Fertilizer and was active in the Tri State Rose Society holding most offices. He was a certified consulting Rosarian and was awarded the Silver Honor Medal by the American Rose Society in 2008. Most recently he served on the Cleveland Planning Commission. He was preceded in death by parents, Thomas Edward and Zora Jenkins Guthrie, son, Andrew Thomas Guthrie, and brothers: Paul Guthrie and Ben Guthrie. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Lou Beard Guthrie of Cleveland; son, Kenneth Guthrie and wife Becky of Cleveland; granddaughter, Emily Guthrie of Cleveland; brother, James R. Guthrie and wife Thelma of Dalton, GA; sisters: Evelyn Moore and husband Charles, and Betty Sneed and husband Verlin, all of Cleveland; sister-in-law, Jean Guthrie of Rogersville; mother-in-law, Anna Lou Beard of Cleveland; sister-in-law, Cathryn Norwood of Cartersville; brother-in-law, George Beard of Byhalia, MS; special friend, Clayton Beaty of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with Reverend Robert Smith, Reverend Donald Harris officiating. Interment will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with Mitchell Baldree, Stephen Norwood, John Beaty, Keith Beck, Eric Sunquist, Dennis Ellis and Brandon Beard serving as pallbearers. The members of Wesley Seekers Sunday School Class and Tri State Rose Society will serve as honorary pallbearers
