Samuel David Carpenter, 83, went to be with the Lord on October 11, 2014 while at the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence.

Sam was born October 2, 1931 and is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helga, and by four children (Bill Carpenter, Linda Carpenter, Lisa Hillmann, Leslie Lynn) all of whom are married and together blessed his life with 8 beautiful grandchildren.

Sam went to Ohio University and received his law degree at the University of Michigan. At Ohio University, he played college football, sang in a men's quartet, and performed in theatre productions. His law studies were interrupted by service in the Air Force for two years before returning to Ann Arbor. At U of M, he sang in the men's a cappella group and directed the Men's Law Club choral group. There he met the love of his life, Helga Frank. They married in 1959 and settled in Battle Creek Michigan, where Sam became a partner in the Vandervoort, Christ, and Fisher PC law firm. He practiced law in Battle Creek for 50 years, retiring in 2009. He also did pro bono legal work at Burnham Brook and Haven of Rest Ministries, and volunteered as Judge Advocate for American Legion Post 54. Sam was a person of great faith, active in both the First Presbyterian Church and the First Wesleyan Church, as well as in numerous Bible study groups. He was also very active in the Battle Creek Community, including serving at the Haven of Rest Ministries, the Gideon's, Battle Creek Host Lions Club, American Legion and the Battle Creek Y Center. Sam loved sports as an athlete and spectator. He lettered in four sports in high school, and remained active with golf, tennis and racquetball throughout his adult life. Sam's love of music and ability to sing and play instruments created great joy for himself, his family, and the Battle Creek Community. He played piano at McCamly Place, Burnham Brook, Shranks Cafeteria and in many senior living facilities.

The family will receive visitors at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home today, October 14th, from 6-8 pm. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the First Wesleyan Church on October 15th at 1pm. Donations can be made to the Haven of Rest Ministries, 11 Green St., Battle Creek, MI 49014.
