WOONSOCKET - Howard N. "Red" Gardner, Jr. of Woonsocket died Saturday afternoon at home. He was | the loving husband of Mary I. (Connolly) Gardner. They | were married on May 26, 1989.
Born in Tracy, Connecticut he was a son of the late Howard N. Gardner, Sr. and Loretta (Gosselin) Gardner. He was a graduate of North Attleboro High school and resided in Attleboro for over 35 years before moving to Woonsocket.
Mr. Gardner served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theater in particular the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct and Victory Medals and the European African Middle-Eastern Theater and American Theater Campaign Ribbons.
Following his service he was employed as a truck driver for North American Van Lines and Chex Finer Foods. Howard was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Woonsocket for a number of years.
Howard, "Red", will be remembered as a gentleman with a kind and quiet manner.
In addition to his wife of 25 years he is survived by three sons Howard, John, and Gary Gardner all of Attleboro and four step-sons Dennis Duplessis of Indiana, Richard Dupelssis of Woonsocket and Dean and David Duplessis both of North Smithfield. He was the father of the late Dennis Gardner. He was the brother of Shirley Parker, Marie Charron and the late Phyllis Bryson. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His funeral service will be Thursday at 10:30 am in the Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home, 127 Carrington Ave. Woonsocket. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Bellingham. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 5-8 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans 17 Court St. Boston, MA 02108.
