She was the devoted wife of the late Jimmie L. Wood, whom she married on November 8, 1941.
She was born in Quincy, FL to the late Melvina (Wiley) Tennell and James Roby Keaton. She attended local schools in Quincy and labored in tobacco.
In 1947, her young family moved to Hartford where she meticulously performed domestic work and provided safe and caring environments for neighbors' and family's children who worked outside of the home.
Bernice was known coast to coast for her superb cooking and baking. Delicious sweet potato pies and German Chocolate cakes were her specialties.
Bernice was a committed member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Hartford for 68 years and named a Church Mother.
She was "the best" wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin, friend and confidant. Her words of wisdom will reign for lifetimes.
Bernice was a mighty matriarch of her family and leaves to cherish memories of her: four children, 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, two brothers, and a host of adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, extended family, an ever present church family and many wonderful friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Bernice was predeceased by: son Stanley James Wood; daughter and son-in-law Belle and Leo Johnson Jr.; and eight siblings, Annie Mae Henry, Alice Hill, Jessie Johnson, Mary Alice Jones, James, David ("Shorty"), Robert ("RL") and Dave Keaton Sr.
