Sarah Dudley Burton, 96, of Berryville, Virginia, died Thursday, November 19, 2015, at her home, after a short illness.

Mrs. Burton was born in 1919, in Martinsville, Virginia, the daughter of the late Dr. William B. and Marion M. Dudley.

She is survived by her daughter, Sally Burton Neff and son, Brown D. Burton and his wife, Sally Woods Burton; her sister, Frances Dudley Strickland; 3 grandchildren, Luke Burton Neff, Elizabeth Ann Burton, William Alexander Burton.

Her husband, George W. Burton, preceded her in death.

She was a 1939 graduate of Randolph Macon Women’s College. In 1945 she married George W. Burton.

Mrs. Burton organized the first Brownie Scout Troop in Berryville and served as president of the Blue Ridge Area Girl Scout Council for 2 years.

She was a founding member of the Town and Country Garden Club in Berryville and a Past President of the Winchester-Clarke Garden Club.

Mrs. Burton loved daffodils. She planted more than 100 varieties at her home with thousands of blooms every spring. She was an accredited judge for the American Daffodil Society and winner of the ADS’s Carey E. Quinn medal for outstanding exhibiting. She was a charter member of the American Boxwood Society. Mrs. Burton served on the Shenandoah University Landscape Committee for 10 year.

A member of the original Blue Ridge Players, she directed and performed at the former Opera House in Berryville.

Mrs. Burton was a member of the Berryville Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening, from 6:00-8:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday, at Burwell Cemetery at Old Chapel, Millwood, Virginia.

Everyone is invited to join the family at her home following the service.
