The son of Elizabeth DeArmond or Dearman (the latter per the 1860 census), in 1860 he was a laborer living with his mother and working for tavern keeper Martin Grule in Rapho Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. By 1864, he stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and gray eyes. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one and mustered into federal service at Lancaster April 14, 1864, as a private with Co. G, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865. He is in the company register, the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file, and Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers as "Auchey" but applied for his disability pension as "Achey." He married Sarah Anna Markley ca. 1867 and fathered Albert M. (b. 07/19/67), Emma (b. @1869), Elizabeth M. (b. 09/25/70), Anna (b. @1873), Elmer Markley (b. 03/31/74), Sallie M. (b. 10/31/77), William (b. @1880), Ephraim Markley (b. 01/12/83), and Allen H. (b. 02/15/86, d. 04/11/87). He died at the stated age of 82-1-18 from "chronic interstitial nephritis" that put him into an "uremic coma." The year 1841 is also reported as his birth year, but no census in which he appears supports that, and his stated age at enlistment points to 1842. Oddly, none of his obituaries mentions his Civil War service. [Biography provided by F.A.G. contributor Dennis Brandt]
