Sonoma Democrat, 3 January, 1861
"GRANT--- The Hon. Gilbert A, a distinguished citizen of San Francisco, died of erysipelas, in this city, Monday morning last."

Sacramento Daily Union, 1 January, 1861
"GRANT--- Col. Gilbert A. Grant, a well known politician, died in San Francisco."

New York Times, 26 January, 1861
"GRANT--- Hon. Gilbert A. Grant died on Monday, Dec. 31, quite suddenly, going off in much the way that Gen. Haven went-taken with a hot fever on Thursday preceding, with erysipelas on Friday, suffering an effusion of water on the brain on Saturday, and gradually failing to the end.
GRANT will be missed on the street and political circles. He was one of the original, out-and-out straight Republicans. He was born in Vermont in 1813, and edited a paper there. Came to California in 1849, practiced a little at the bar, was elected in 1858 to the State Senate, voted for the bulkhead, was denounced by the Bulletin, won a suit against that paper in 1859, and was quite sure, his friends thought, of some snug berth after the 4th of March.
He leaves a daughter aged 15 and two younger sons, now three years motherless. The only Courts in session yesterday, the Probate and the County Court, adjourned in respect to his memory.
His funeral is to be attended on New Year's day at Dr. Anderson's (Presbyterian Church)."
