Thursday, 18 October 1928
Mr. Charles Levi Youmans, one of Appling's most substantial citizens, after three weeks of painful illness yielded to death on the evening of Oct. 10th at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Bryant Yawn near Graham. He had been in declining health for several months. Mr. Youmans was born in Baker County, Florida March 27, 1853 and moved with his parents to Appling County, Georgia about the close of the War between the States. He was married March 24, 1875 to Miss Kezia Abigail Blitch, daughter of the late Rev. Benjamin Blitch of Wayne County, Georgia. A few years later he united with Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church which cause he helped support and was a faithful attendant at services until he was no longer physically able to go. He was a close student of the Bible and was well informed on the subject. In the prime of life he was a man of full stature and strong physique. This strength was not idled away nor wasted but spent in arduous toil being engaged in timber and lumber business also farming. He was among the number who invaded the original forest of our section, hewing down the giant yellow pine that woodman's axe had never touched then later drifting them down the Altamaha to be shipped to various parts of the earth. It will be interesting to know just how far reaching in the building of the world's architecture this one man's part has played. He loved nature, plant and animal life, and had acquired some knowledge of meterology and astronomy. With his passing the community loses a useful citizen and a good neighbor. He is survived by his widow and six children; Mr. R. E. Youmans of Baxley, Ga., Mr. B. H. Youmans of Florence, So. Car., Mrs. Charles Moody of Chunchula, Ala, Mrs. Ira Moody of Baxley, Mrs. Calvin Head of Pavo, Ga. Also one brother Mrs. J. E. Youmans and a sister, Mrs. Alonozo Reynolds. Funeral services were conducted at Ten Mile Church by Rev. George Moody and the Holmesville Masonic Lodge of which he was many years a member.
