Martin Stanley Bergman
Aug. 9, 1932 - Oct. 29, 2014 Martin "Marty" Stanley Bergman passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. He was born to loving parents, Fred and Ann Raden Bergman on 8/9/32 after they made their way through striking coalminers from their home in Nelsonville, OH to the hospital in Athens, OH. Marty attended school in Pt. Pleasant, WVA before graduating from high school in Nelsonville, OH. He then attended Ohio State University, whose athletic endeavors he followed with great interest through the rest of his life. After OSU, Marty served honorably in the US Army Corp of engineers during the Korean Conflict. Moving to AL in 1955, Marty was involved in retail at Loveman's, Parisians, and the Canterbury Shop before he and his late brother-in-law, Alan Howard, opened Piper's Ltd, a fine men's clothing store in English Village. Marty's devotion to his family, immediate and extended, was his most important role in life and all of his loved ones were deeply impacted by him. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Joan Silverberg Bergman and their two daughters, Fawn Bloomston and Amy Hamilton (Brent); grandchildren, Alyssa and Jared Bloomston, Cole and Matt Hamilton; nephews Steve Howard (Judy), Jerry Howard (Janyce), and Jeffrey Silverberg; nieces, Carole Howard Rich (Jerry) and Julie Silverberg Bolyard (David); and brother-in-law, Allan Silverberg. The family requests that memorials be made in Marty's name to the Bergman/Pinkston Professorship in Physical Therapy, School of Health Professions, UAB; Collat Jewish Family Services, or a charity of your choice .
