Son of Solomon Aikens and Betsey Smith.
Born in Barnard, Windsor, Vermont on 13 January, 1788.
Entered Middlebury College in 1804, studying there for three years. Studied law with the Hon. Joel Doolittle.
Entered West Point on 30 November, 1807 on leave of absence.
In 1812, returned to Windsor,
Captain, 31st Reg. U.S.V, in the War of 1812.
Lawyer in Windsor, Vt until 1843, then he removed to Westport, N.Y.
First native Vermonter of the Supreme Court.
Represented in Windsor in the legislature of Vermont, 1812-1820.
Judge of Vermont Supreme Court, 1823-1825.
President, Council of Censors of Vermont, 1827.
Editor Vermont Supreme Court Reports, 1828-1828.
Published two law books: "Practical Forms"in 1836 and "Tables" in 1846.
Married Nancy Ann Spencer on 24 January, 1809. Children: Emma Jeromine and Julienne Gertrude.
Married 2nd to Sarah Hunter, daughter of the Hon. William Hunter and Mary Newell, on 4 December, 1814. Children: Villeroy Spencer, Mary Elizabeth, Helen St. Johns, Augusta, William Hunter, Edwin Edgerton, Charles Eugene, Sarah Hunter, Guy Hunter and Franklin Hunter Aikens.
