(1985, Nolan County Historical Society)
Page 350

Mary Hoover was born 29 September 1897 near Mineola, Wood County, Texas. She was delivered by a Negro midwife named Maragel. Mary first came west in 1903 by wagon. Later, she moved east to Winona, Smith County, Texas. Later, she moved again, this time to Mineola, Wood County, Texas. In 1906, Mary, with her family, moved west again. Her mother, with the other children, went by train to Abilene. Her half brother, she and her father went by wagon to Ft. Worth. Then, by train they went to Eskota, Texas. They arrived about 5 AM. Snow, sleet and ice covered everything. They walked to her uncle's place (about 9 miles), where her mother and the other children were living. Mary Hoover and her family picked cotton for their room and board. They moved into the old home place near Sweetwater on Thanksgiving Day, 1906. The old home place only had three rooms, and 18 people lived there. Mary picked cotton until the 6th of March that year. She started to school on March 8th and dropped out three weeks later with the measles.

Mary Eunice Hoover married Walter Thomas Scott on 26 December 1926. She now resides in Sweetwater.
