Mrs. Sarah Jane Scott, Pioneer Settler, 77, Dies At Lake Home

Death removed another of Nolan County's pioneer settlers at 12:25 this morning, Mrs. Sarah Jane Scott, 77, succumbing to a long period of ill health at her home in the Lake Sweetwater community.

Mrs. Scott, widow of the late Henry G. Scott, who died in 1923, expired in the same community where she had lived for half a century. Born in Newton County, Missouri, she came to Texas when six years old, settling in Hunt County. On July 4, 1880, she was married to Mr. Scott and in 1889, eight years after organization of the county, moved here, establishing their home near Lake Sweetwater, where they resided since. Nine children were born to the couple, all surviving.

Mr. Scott served the county as commissioner several years. The Scott family has been prominently associated with Sweetwater and West Texas as public officials and civic leaders. A son, Will H. Scott, served Nolan County for six years as County Superintendent and was representative from 117th legislative district four years.

Another son, Crutcher Scott, Abilene, is a member of the board of trustees of Abilene Christian College and is president of the Ex-Students' Association.

Women of the family have been community leaders in home demonstration and club work.

Children are: Mrs. J. W. Rogers, Miss Zotie Scott, Mrs. Walter Witt, Mrs. W. H. Bennett, Mrs. Claude Rogers, Mrs. L. D. Faver, Jr., Mrs. Irl Faver, Will Scott and Crutcher Scott.

Funeral services were being held at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the Church of Christ, where she had been a member for a long number of years. J. P. Crenshaw, minister, was officiating. Under direction of Johnston's Funeral Home, interment is to be made in the city cemetery by the graveside of Mr. Scott.

Pallbearers are Tommie Bonner, L. C. Muns, H. A. Tansil, Roy Mathews, Arch Mathews and A. J. Barnett. Honorary pallbearers are friends of the Lake Sweetwater and Bittercreek communities.
